The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
